When to Go

San Luis Obispo County offers recreation all year. The weather is mild; so most days are good for hiking, golfing and other outdoor activities.

This March scene shows the seasonal green. Grass occurs in the winter months; since it depends upon the storms that come off the Pacific.

The weather pattern depends primarily upon the westerly winds that blow off the Pacific. The storms bring the rain come during the winter months with January and February often being the primary rainy months.

The weather pattern are created by the as the earth turns from west to east. The water lags and sets up currents and the winds. A large circular current is set up that comes across the Pacific from Japan. The Japanese current travels to the Gulf of Alaska and then down the Coast of Washington, Oregon and California. In the winter it dumps rain and snow, and in the summer it brings the warm sea breezes onto land.

This moderate temperature of water of the Pacific gives the coast of California its mediterranean climate.
